Welcome to the backup Web site of INTERNATIONAL SHINBUDO ASSOCIATION! Please, visit the official site at: www.international-shinbudo-association.org

ISA is a non-profit network of clubs, groups, and organizations from several countries, which are sending their teams as national representatives to International Shinbudo Games. We are mostly SPORT organization and on international level we are focused only on competitions.

The first idea about SHINBUDO came in 2005, when Dr. Ivica Zdravkovic from Serbia tried to create a simple teaching program for young students. This program was supposed to cover basic elements of Sports Chanbara (Sport Kenjutsu) and basic elements required for Sport Jujutsu fights and jujutsu kata (self-defense) demonstrations and competitions.

Founding principle in creation of Shinbudo curriculum was necessity of quick inclusion of new practitioners in competitive activities. At the same time, the competition formats in Shinbudo are designed with strong emphasis on safety and simplicity. This "KISS" principle ("Keep It Safe & Simple") was a guideline for creation of our sport competition rules and training programs.

Expression "Shinbudo" consists of two words: SHIN - new, and BUDO - Martial Way. This implies the difference between old BUDO concepts (frequently linked to strict discipline, militaristic hierarchy, DAN grade system and emphasis on metaphysical aspects of training) and SHINBUDO as "new" or "modern" combat system, which is created for sport and is not burdened with harsh tradition, "street-wise approach", "no-nonsense reality-based practical techniques", etc.

Shinbudo is simply a NEW CONCEPT of training and competing in martial arts and sports of Japanese origin. It is a cross section of modern Sport Jujutsu and modern Sport Kenjutsu (also known as chanbara). For this reason, our logo contains Japanese ideograms (kanji) for Jujutsu ("Ju-Jitsu") and Kenjutsu. These ideograms are placed in Yin-Yang circle, illustrating necessity for our youngest contestants to practice both disciplines, both sports, so that they can get a complete view of Japanese martial arts.

Inspiration for swordsmanship included in Shinbudo comes from ingenious work of Tanabe Tetsundo sensei, creator of Chanbara. Aside from Tanabe sensei, role-models in Shinbudo are also legendary Jigoro Kano, father of judo, and many karate enthusiasts who have created modern karate as we know it. Finally, we had large inspiration in modern jujutsu competitions, especially ones created by JJIF, ISJA and other similar organizations.

There are two main areas in Shinbudo:

1. Sport Jujutsu
2. Sport Kenjutsu

It is within these two areas where our contestants show their knowledge and skills of modern jujutsu, based on judo, karate and aikido, and modern kenjutsu, based on chanbara, kendo and iaido.
